The public transport in Taipei is very convenient and well organized so you can live very comfortably without owning a car or a scooter. Actually people who own cars have a hard time finding parking spaces because they are both scarce and pricey.
Taipei’s transportation card is called Easycard (悠遊卡, Yōuyóu kǎ), it can be used to ride the Taipei MRT or bus systems, rent ubikes, and also used for payments in convenience stores like 7-11 and Family Mart, and supermarkets.
There are three types of cards: adult card (普通卡), student cards (學生卡) and the concessionaire cards (優待卡).
To buy the student Easycard you need to have a Taiwanese student ID card, student ID cards from other countries are not accepted.
The concessionaire card is available for anyone over 65 years old, and it can be purchased with a Taiwanese ID or a foreign passport.
Places you can use the Easycard:
- Public transit: Taipei MRT (20% discount), city buses, trains, youbikes, Maokong Gondola, Kaohsiung MRT
- Convenience Stores and Shops
- Family Mart (全家), 7-11, Hi-Life (萊爾富), OK mart, and others including some drink shops
Some schools and universities issue student ID cards with integrated Easycard, so the students can use it for services inside the campus.
Custom Easycard: If you want a special unique design you can find one in the convenience stores. Usually each store has its own selection so you can shop around! 🙂
